New Year walking holiday in South Devon

Our New Year walking holiday in  Devon will be based on the South Hams coast, an area which is blessed with more than its share of scenic grandeur and variety. Not only does it possess a rugged coastline with magnificent cliffs and rocky headlands but look inland and you will see a luxuriant patchwork of fields and woodland, valleys and hills, which runs right down to the coast. Through all this splendour the tranquil River Dart flows to meet the sea at Dartmouth.

We will walk around the magnificent promontories of Bolt Head, Prawle Point, Start Point and Gammon Head where winter waves crash against the cliffs; through the idyllic thatched villages of Slapton and Hope Cove; along the beautiful sandy beach at Soar Mill Cove and amid the cheerful bustle of Salcombe, where even in winter the white-washed houses and colourful boats give the town a Mediterranean feel. We shall visit the handsome town of Dartmouth, where the historic buildings and alleyways look particularly attractive dressed for the festive season.

The holiday will commence with a cream tea on the afternoon of Thursday 29th December and finish after breakfast on Tuesday 3rd January. The non-walking highlight of the holiday will be a ‘gala dinner’ on New Year’s Eve, and toasting the turn of the year in local Sharpham Vineyard sparkling wine.

We stay at Stoke Lodge Hotel [ETB/AA***] in the delightful village of Stoke Fleming. The hotel is situated in an elevated position in the centre of the village, surrounded by three acres of gardens, lawns and woodland with seaviews from the southern aspect. The restaurant prides itself on preparing good food with the emphasis on quality local produce. All of the attractive and well-appointed bedrooms have ensuite bathroom facilities.
